Would You Feel Better Knowing Your Own Expert Helped Pick Your Medicare Plan?

If you’ve ever talked to retirees about it, you know getting on Medicare is a game changer. Having your health needs covered in a way you can afford brings huge relief.

You can get Medicare’s government-sponsored health coverage if you pay enough into the program while working and then reach retirement age, or if you qualify for Social Security Disability benefits.

You’ll likely be picking what they call a “Medicare Advantage” plan. These are run by private health insurance companies working with the government health care program.

You have many options. But shopping for insurance is nobody’s idea of fun.

There is someone you can talk to for advice. At Hanley Disability in Indianapolis, we have Medicare Advantage advisers who help you make an informed decision on a plan.

Our Indiana disability advocates have helped thousands of people apply for Social Security Disability for decades.

Sorting Out the Types of Medicare Coverage

Medicare includes a menu of different health care services. To pick the right plan for you, consider your health situation and individual needs.

These are the types of Medicare:

  • Medicare Part A: This is for hospitalization. It also covers home health, nursing home and hospice care. Most people don’t have to pay a premium for Medicare Part A coverage.
  • Medicare Part B: This is for preventative care, including doctor visits, tests and mental health care. It also includes treatment of medical conditions. It charges a premium, which varies in size depending on your circumstances.
  • Medicare Part D: This part covers prescription drugs. Medications have varying costs. Private insurance companies provide this coverage in partnership with Medicare.

And we didn’t forget:

  • Medicare Advantage: This is called Part C. It includes the other parts (A, B & D) put together in different combinations to create a complete health care plan. Private insurance companies contract with Medicare to run Medicare Advantage plans.

Ask the Hanley Disability advocates and Medicare advisers about Medicare Advantage. With our long history of helping people get disability benefits, we have deep experience with health issues and government programs designed to help.

Tips on Choosing the Right Medicare Advantage Plan

When you’re shopping for a Medicare Advantage plan, make sure to check off these tasks:

  • Tallying the costs. You’ll need to compare premiums, deductibles and maximums on how much you would have to pay for medical care yourself and determine what makes the most economic sense for you.
  • Studying the coverage. Make sure you know what’s in the plans you’re looking at, and that they include treatments you know you’ll need. You don’t want to discover later that something important isn’t covered. You also want to know everything you’re entitled to—don’t skip something because you didn’t realize it was, in fact, included in your plan.
  • Squaring Medicare with other coverage. If you have health care or pharmacy coverage through other sources, check how that will work with Medicare. Consider how Medicare Advantage could help with vision, hearing and dental coverage.
  • Looking at the doctors. You’ll need to know if your current doctors, or other doctors you may want to see, accept the plan you’re considering. What health systems, hospitals and individual health care providers are in the plan’s network?

It can be hard to line up all the parts and know for certain which Medicare Advantage plan is best. One plan is good in one way, but weak in another. Another plan has different pros and cons.

This is a chore, but your task is easier with Hanely Disability analyzing your options for you.

A Medicare Advantage adviser from Hanley sees these plans every day, knows the ins and outs of the coverage, and can guide you to a decision you feel confident about.

It’s a good idea to get an experienced set of eyes on this. When you get this done right and get the right support in place for your medical needs, then you can move forward to embrace your healthiest, fullest life.
